2023 SOUNZ Jazz Recording Project recipient announced

Thomas Friggens and his group ‘Quartet Contra’ have been selected for the 2023 SOUNZ Jazz Recording Project | Ngā Hopuranga Puoro Tautito a SOUNZ.

The SOUNZ Jazz Recording Project | Ngā Hopuranga Puoro Tautito a SOUNZ aims to create high-quality recordings (audio and video) of original jazz compositions by New Zealand jazz composers.

The SOUNZ Jazz Recording Project, now in its seventh year, showcases talented jazz composers by capturing their original compositions, which are shared online as part of the SOUNZ Films project. Our past collaborations with creatives like Anita Schwabe, Jasmine Lovell-Smith, John Rae, Thomas Botting, Bryn van Vliet and Michael Costeloe have been a resounding success, producing high-quality recordings of New Zealand jazz compositions. As we embark on this year’s recordings, we eagerly anticipate the lineup from Thomas Friggens and his Contra Quartet,” said SOUNZ’s Chief Executive Diana Marsh.

Friggens said, “I’m feeling absolutely thrilled to be a part of the Sounz Jazz Recording Project with my ensemble, Quartet Contra. This opportunity to record these compositions in such a fantastic studio is a real privilege. Thank you, Sounz for giving me this opportunity. I’m so very excited to share the music with everyone!”

The recordings will be made in December at the Massey University recording studios in Wellington. Following the final editing process, the recordings will be made available for streaming and promoting on the SOUNZ website and embedding on the composer’s website.
